Dnepropetrovsk Sunrise – Material is Movement

Place: Interpipe Steel mill, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine
Year: 2012
Artist: Olafur Eliasson
Client: Studio Olafur Eliasson

Production of an artwork by Olafur Eliasson, conceived for the steel mill in Dnepropetrovsk of the company Interpipe. The installation “Material is movement” is part of Eliasson’s project “Dnepropetrovsk Sunrise” which consists of several artworks installed inside and outside the steel mill.
“Material is movement” is installed in the main hall of the factory, and comprises one circular and four elliptical discs made of reflective yellow glass. Lights, installed in the gap between the discs and the wall, create a soft glow around the circumferences of the discs. The disks of big dimensions progress from the upper circle-shaped mirror to ever more elongated ellipses (length axis up to 20 m), producing the impression of a disc becoming foreshortened as it spins in the space.
